Study Programme

The study programme of Advanced Materials and Healthcare Engineering has the focus on design and fabrication of advanced materials for applications in the healthcare sector, especially materials for drug delivery, diagnostics, and healthcare products. Such advanced materials often consist of a material with a primary function (like carrying a drug or sensing a compound), which is decorated with specific biomolecules for increased functionality.

The healthcare sector is central for supporting a high quality of life of the individual. The healthcare sector has however a large demand on improvements in diagnostics and treatment at a cost that is sustainable for society. The study programme aims to create candidates with high theoretical and practical competences to create products for these areas.

DTU has a growing and strong activity in research in materials for drug delivery, diagnostics, and healthcare products. Examples of competencies include advanced nano particles decorated with molecules or structures for homing to the right tissue and passage over barriers, engineered immune system responses, advanced in vitro models for replacing animal in drug testing, human and animal testing of advanced materials, and highly sensitive sensor systems for distributed molecular diagnostics. The students will be part of this growing field of research at DTU.

Study programme focus

The study programme will give candidates competencies to work in the healthcare engineering field. The programme focuses are on:

  • The design of materials with specific functions for products used in the healthcare sector
  • Analysis of, and finding solution to, real world industrial medical needs and products
  • Methods of evaluating impact and function of advanced materials on cells, tissue, and humans
  • Choosing instrumentation and analytical techniques for characterizing medical and medicotechnical products
  • Methods for product validation including usage of statistics and experimental design

You will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with both Danish and international companies - either as part of the courses, as an individual project or while writing your thesis.

The MSc Eng is a two-year graduate programme with a workload of 120 ECTS credit points.

Industry MSc Eng programmes

Beyond the mandatory courses establishing the core profile of the study programme, students can choose to pursue one of three specializations within the study programme. The chosen specialization will be stated on the diploma. Each specialization includes a number of courses from which the student can choose a subset to match their particular interests. The three study lines are.

It is not mandatory to pursue one of the three specializations. Thus, each student has every opportunity to design their own study programme by choosing from the wide range of courses offered at DTU.

Career

An MSc in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology opens up a range of job opportunities, but DTU graduates tend to gravitate towards the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, and university research.
