Typical fields of work

The broad knowledge in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and fermentation technology is in biotechnology engineers combined with a deep knowledge in a specialized area. Therefore, MSc Eng graduates in Biotechnology are capable of working with multifaceted challenges combining research, development, and production. Your competencies will prove useful at all stages of the process from basic research and development through process and production optimization to patenting, sales, and marketing of the finished products. Public and private regulatory authorities as well as the consultancy industry also need people with your skills. Finally, many biotech engineers hold managerial positions in large private companies.

Bioengineers have many career opportunities in Denmark, which hosts some of the world’s leading biotech companies. In the rest of the world, biotechnology engineers are highly attractive in the global bio based industry which is experiencing rapid growth.

Pursue a PhD

Once you have an MSc in Engineering, you might get the opportunity to continue your studies and apply for admission to the three-year PhD, which at DTU is a research-based programme ranking among the best in the world. You can do either a regular PhD or an industrial PhD, the latter with concurrent employment in a company. 

As a PhD student, you will be part of a research group and will carry out an independent scientific project.
