Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing
Study Line: Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing:
- Fermentation Bio-engineers contribute to the transition towards a sustainable society by optimizing cell factory based production of proteins and biochemicals thereby outcompeting environmentally damaging production methods.
- Within this study line, you will obtain competences in designing, implementing, and operating fermentation processes by combining cell factory engineering and process technology.
- Focus areas include optimization of fermentation processes using techniques and knowledge from genetic engineering, cell physiology, bioreactor design, downstream processing, waste handling, and life cycle analysis.
Recomended prequisites for the study line (to be completed during the bachelor education):
- Experimental microbiology (exemplified by the DTU course: 27027 Experimental Molecular Microbiology)
- Fermentation technology (exemplified by the DTU course: 27034 Fermentation technology)

The FBM study line at the Biotechnology MSc Eng education is together with the FBM study line in the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering MSc Eng education supported by a large grant to develop and increase competence transfer between the two educations for nurturing industrially required cross competence fermentation experts. To ensure this desired outcome, the FBM study line is more restricted in its choices than other study lines, and furthermore the projects for the Master thesis and a mandatory practical course (se below) have to be accepted by both the study leader and the FBM Joint program manager to for offering FBM core competences:
- Mandatory Practical course (FBM Industrial practice, 10-15 ECTS project course) in a biotech company or a DTU pilot facility
- Master thesis (30 - 35 ECTS)
