Healthcare Materials Engineering - Study line

The candidates taking the Healthcare Materials Engineering line will be particularly adept at developing new materials and applying them in new and better health technology products. The approach is by having a deep knowledge of methods for analyzing and controlling the properties of the materials. Examples of candidates' tasks in companies include development, validation and quality assurance of medical devices such as urinary tract catheters, surgical implants, and future cell-based analysis and treatment products. Candidates will be experts in materials chemistry for healthcare products and have a very good understanding of these materials interaction with tissue and organisms.

Competences:

  • analyze the physical, chemical and mechanical requirements of a material in a specific biomedical application, including diagnostics and therapy
  • design a material-based solution to a biomedical problem by combining an analysis of requirements with in-depth knowledge of materials properties including chemistry, fabrication possibilities and biocompatibility.
  • analyze and describe immediate early and late cell, tissue and body responses to materials
  • discuss commonly occurring decomposition mechanisms for materials relevant to biomedical products and related adverse effects on living organisms
  • choose methods to sterilize materials and have insight into the possible undesirable effects of the methods on the properties of the materials
  • evaluate and report on the advantages and disadvantages of a biomedical product focusing on the materials used.
