Biophotonics and Sensors
The study line focuses on providing a basic understanding of the relevant measurement techniques and methods, data processing, and optical devices used in optical sensing. Graduates will for example be able to develop tools and techniques that will help improve the ability to monitor climate and environment parameters for civil authorities, DMI (meteorological institutions), consulting engineering firms and the EU.
Courses
Biophotonics and Optical sensors are very promising fields within Photonics. One reason for this is the applicability of optical methods for making online non-invasive measurements as well as advanced imaging techniques that enable for example chemists and biologists to identify material or enable doctors to indentify or treat diseases without the need for invasive surgery.
The following technology specialization courses are mandatory for this study line
22511 | Biomedical optics | 5 | point | Autumn E4A (Tues 13-17) |
22512 | Optical biosensors | 5 | point | Autumn E5A (Wed 8-12) |
34430 | Introduction to biophotonics | 5 | point | Spring F5A (Wed 8-12) |
Apart from these courses the student also has to pick at least 15 ECTS from the following list
10347 | Introduction to Biophysics | 5 | point | Autumn E5B (Wed 13-17) |
22052 | Applied signal processing | 10 | point | Spring F2 (Mon 13-17, Thurs 8-12) |
34032 | Optical properties of solids | 5 | point | Autumn E1B (Thurs 13-17) |
34440 | Novel optical fibers in life sciences | 5 | point | Autumn E2A (Mon 13-17) |
Note that 10347 is a BSc courses. According to DTU's rules a student is not allowed to take more than 10 ECTS credits of BSc courses during the MSc program.
Proposed study plan
Below is an example of a study plan. Note:
“34046 Experimental methods in photonics” runs in January and should be completed as early as possible.
“42429 Project management,” runs in August. May be replaced by “42430 Project Management,” that runs in January
The course “34043 Projects in optics and photonics,” runs both in the spring and fall.
Students are encouraged to follow the courses:"34041 Waveguide optics“ and “34034 Lasers and Photonic systems,” as elective courses
