Support for students with literacy problems

If you are having problems reading and writing, you may be suffering from dyslexia. Dyslexia is a condition independent of intelligence or poor eyesight. Dyslexia is a permanent impairment which makes it difficult to handle written language, and which can therefore affect your studies.

If you have dyslexia, you might:
  • read and spell in a slow, imprecise manner
  • have problems learning and remembering new words and names, such as specialized terms from your courses
  • have very different written and oral formulation skills
  • have problems reading and writing a foreign language
  • have problems remembering sentences while writing them down
  • have problems formulating complicated contexts in writing
  • have problems giving a summary of a text
  • misunderstand information and text
  • pay very little attention to detail or vice versa
  • have problems planning time and tasks, and avoid or postpone tasks related to reading and writing.

As a dyslexic student, you may, for instance, be granted the following support:

  • Dyslexic test, currently at Copenhagen's Adult Education Centre (KVUC).
  • Diagnosis at a communication centre, currently at Copenhagen's Adult Education Centre (KVUC).
  • IT starter package, consisting of a computer with an auto suggest program, speech synthesis, or other compensatory equipment, a scanner pen, a dictaphone, a scanner etc. Courses in using the starter package and the possibility of further diagnosis are also part of the starter package grant and must not be applied for separately.
  • Program package if you want to use your own computer, for instance, if you have a Mac. Please note, however, that Mac users have to pay for a conversion program, and the program package does not include a scanner pen, dictaphone, scanner etc., which must therefore be applied for separately.
  • Study support at a communication centre, e.g. help in connection with written assignments and improving your structuring and planning skills (currently at Copenhagen's Adult Education Centre (KVUC)).
  • Teaching materials on digital media via https://nota.dk/.

NB! IT tools can be borrowed but must be returned if you leave or complete your study programme.
