Support for students who are physically handicapped

Students who are physically handicapped might be experiencing very different types of problems in relation to their studies, which means they have different needs for help.

If you are physically handicapped, you might also have problems in connection with:

  • staying focused in relation to your studies
  • endurance
  • maintaining an overview of your studies
  • structuring and planning your studies.

Physically handicapped students can receive support in many different forms.

The support depends on the type and degree of impairment. If you suffer from a bad back, you may be granted ergonomic chairs and tables, and if you are confined to a wheelchair, you will generally receive practical support. Sometimes, however, different types of problems call for the same support.

  • Ergonomic chairs and tables used as aids in connection with sedentary work to relieve the body of pain.
  • Mouse, keyboard, and book rest, which are specially designed ergonomic aids.
  • Dictaphone, which is a tool for taking notes.
  • IT starter package for students with motor disabilities in arms and legs, for instance. In some cases, the Dictus speech recognition program may be the most appropriate solution, as it reduces the need for secretarial support.
  • Practical help in the form of a personal assistant if you need help getting around on campus, taking your books out of your bag, eating, going to the toilet, and possibly in connection with the use of a respirator.
  • Secretarial assistance if you need help with taking notes, big assignments, exam registration, copying, searching for information at libraries etc.

NB! IT tools can be borrowed but must be returned if you either leave or complete your study programme. Tables and chairs do usually not have to be returned.

NB! Special educational support is not granted for transport to and from the educational institution.
