In order to develop the innovative and cutting-edge solutions that are required to solve the climate challenges, we need strong partnerships across disciplines and sectors.

DTU Bioengineering is ready to be a strong partner in the four Innomissions that constitute the Danish government’s strategy for investments in green research, technology and innovation. Together with our partners, we are already well on the way with engineering sustainable biobased solutions to many of the challenges.

Entering into partnerships is nothing new to DTU Bioengineering. We are constantly searching for new partners in universities, the public sector and the biotech industry. We need partners to realize the potential in the many converging technologies and to get the results out of the university and into the market where they can truly make an impact in society.

Sustainable agriculture

Our partnership with the agricultural science company FMC is a good example of a strong partnership, which has the potential to make a positive impact on the environment through a more sustainable agricultural production.

In the project Smarter AgroBiological Screening (SABS), we aim to improve technologies for finding biofungicides, which are natural microorganisms that can protect plants from fungal diseases and are as such a sustainable alternative to current fungicides. The final product will be brought to market by FMC.

Enzyme Excellence

Engineered enzymes is another aspect of biotechnology that I believe have great potential to solve many of the challenges addressed in the Innomissions. Denmark already stands strong in enzyme research and as the world-leading enzyme researcher Bernard Henrissat, with funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, has moved his research to Denmark, the research area has been strengthened further. He is now part of the strong enzyme research environment that we have at DTU Bioengineering, where we are already successfully engineering a multitude of enzymes for carbon capture & use, for plastic and textile degradation and more.

We are ready to boost the entire biotech area through these Innomissions thereby helping to solve the climate challenges. See examples of how we are already doing it in this issue of BioTrends.

The Innomissions

The Danish government has adopted a strategy for investments in green research, technology and innovation. Under the auspices of Innovation Fund Denmark the government will invest in mission-driven green research and innovation partnerships, which will accelerate the development of cutting-edge solutions ranging all the way from strategic coherent research to commercialization, with an equal focus on short -, mid - and long term impact.

  1. Capture and storage or use of CO2
  2. Green fuels for transport and industry (Power-to-X, etc.)
  3. Climate- and environment-friendly agriculture and food production
  4. Circular economy with a focus on plastics and textiles
