DTU instrument passes first scientific test on its way to the asteroid Psyche

The flyby of Mars provided the first opportunity to test the scientific performance of the DTU-developed magnetometer on a planet.

Facts

The Psyche mission has a total of three scientific instruments on board:

  • Magnetometer developed by DTU Space.
  • ‘Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometer’ from the US research centre Applied Physics Laboratory, which measures gamma and neutron radiation from the asteroid’s surface to reveal the elements it is composed of.
  • ‘Multispectral Imager’ from Arizona State University, which takes images across multiple wavelengths of light, enabling researchers to map the asteroid’s surface and identify different minerals.

The analysis of the scientific data from the magnetometry experiment is being carried out in close collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Psyche mission is led by the Space Science Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.
