This time, we are putting happiness under the microscope. What can science even tell us about happiness? What makes us happy? And can we use technology to measure how happy we are? These are some of the questions addressed in the new issue of Technologist.
One of the experts contributing to the new issue is Sune Lehmann from DTU Compute, who explains how we can use large volumes of data—e.g. from Twitter—to measure when in the week people are most happy (Sunday morning, by the way.)
Another topic discussed in this issue is 'superbugs'—the multi-resistant bacteria and their increasing prevalence in Europe. One of the experts in this area is Mikael Lenz Strube, who is affiliated with DTU Chemical Engineering and DTU Vet. He explains that we are moving into the post-antibiotic era where a splinter in the finger can be fatal. He also emphasizes that we have to find new, preventive treatments for common conditions in animals and humans—e.g. probiotic foods and dietary supplements boosting good bacteria and combating the harmful ones.
Technologist also has a website—www.technologist.eu—featuring daily new posts from the world of science and technology together with selected articles from the printed magazine. You can also follow the magazine on both Facebook and Twitter.
