Students predicts this summer’s beer sales

Information technology Data analysis
Four DTU students secured first place in the autumn Open Innovation X finals with a data-driven ‘Beer Forecast’ model that can optimize future beer sales for Danish Royal Unibrew.

Six companies had set more than 160 students a wide range of challenges focusing on handling and interpreting huge data volumes from Danish companies.

The challenges ranged from turbine-optimization and bacterial growth in food production to the purchasing behaviour of Danish consumers.

The winning team from DTU chose to solve Royal Unibrew’s problem where the keywords were weather data, production, and beer sales. They even added an extra dimension to the finals, delivering their pitch from KAIST in Korea, where all four are currently exchange students.

Senior Analyst Kasper Andreasen from the Royal Unibrew: “It was great seeing these bright young minds work with our data and produce a solution for exploiting large volumes of data for future business.”

The OiX final winners
  • 1st place: Beer Forecaster—Jakob Okkels, Emilie Hvashøj, Valentin Lievin, and Kristian Nielsen
  • 2nd place: Super Shopper—Daniella Alalouf, Macarena Mendez, Mette Gere, and Mathias Lyngman
  • 3rd place: Gone with the wind—Frederik Hüttel, Frederik Warburg, Thomas Ørkild, and Nikolaj Witting

New awards
In addition to the prize for best solution to a specific problem, this year also saw prizes awarded for best performing team and best pitch.

The award for best pitch went to two well-dressed DTU students from team BeSMART who were deemed the best communicators.

“Our decision to go after the best pitch award was quite deliberate, and we were praised for a visually stunning and clearly communicated presentation. The ability to communicate and pitch engineering-related projects effectively is a key discipline,” says a delighted Christopher Gregers-Høegh.
