On 15 February 2013 DTU Management Engineering welcomed a new professor in Design and New Product Development – Saeema Ahmed-Kristiansen. DTU Management Engineering can therefore also introduce their first female professor at the Department.

The area of Design and New Product Development uses multidisciplinary research methods to develop methods and tools for supporting the industry. Saeema’s work has included a wide use from a robust medicotechnology to more useful consumer products and fewer flaws in drilling rigs. With Saeema DTU is able to offer one of the world’s strongest research environments at the area and this with both a solid theoretical anchorage and broad industry contact. The education of Design and Innovation will furthermore be enforced at this research area.

Who is Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen?

In 2001 Saeema achieved a PhD degree in Engineering Design from Cambridge University. Afterwards, she was employed as a researcher and Assistant Professor in Engineering at Murray Edwards College at Cambridge University. In 2005, DTU became acquainted with Saeema for the first time when she was employed as Associate Professor at DTU Mechanical Engineering.

Saeemas scientific work is based on fundamental solutions of issues concerning engineering. Saeema has within product development especially worked with recycling design and knowledge against supporting product development processes and developing better products. Saeema’s research takes place in a close industry collaboration and all methods and tools are therefore also tested within the industry. Saeema has with her research contributed to developing new and more rigorous and multidisciplinary research methods. Furthermore, Saeema has as one of the first researchers chosen to use a cognitive understanding of design activities in connection with developing design methods.

Saeema’s latest work consists of leading various projects; A project concerning the development of tools for supporting global product development and innovation (financed by the Danish Industry Foundation 6 million DKK), a project about open innovation with China (financed by EU) as well as a project about interactional design (financed by the company GN Netcom).
