Zoonosis epidemiology Foodborne zoonoses Campylobacter in chickens Parasitology Veterinary Epidemiology

Researcher in the spread of disease (epidemiology) between animals and humans (zoonoses). Current inves working area: risk factors for Campylobacter in ecological and freerange broilers and potential methods of intervention. Research experience Epidemiological research has included viruses (Bovine Herpesvirus-1, Hepatitis E), bacteria (Campylobacter, Coxiella burnetii, Leptospira, Persistent Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus) and parasites (Ascaris, Cryptosporidium, Echinococcus, Eimeria, Dirofilaria repens, Neospora caninum, Toxocara, Toxoplasma gondii, Trichinella). The work has also included studies of the host's immune response to the infection (cytokines and acute phase proteins), EU work on the prioritization of food-borne parasites and intervention studies. Author of 52 peer-reviewed published articles in international refereed journals (1/2-2023); 24 as first author and 13 as last author.  Capacity building / Teaching Teach parasitology in the course General Medical Microbiology (23258), DTU Have been responsible for veterinary parasitology in Estonia.  Taught parasitic zoonoses in Erasmus program. Supervised 2 international Ph.d.'s and several research projects of veterinary students. President and board member of the Scandinavian-Baltic Society for Parasitology 2009-2015. Other Academic Interests Active in intimate partner violence research.
