Physicistand Ph.D.employed as associate professorinaproject with the aimof establishing abetterunderstandingofthe optical properties ofcomponentswith characteristicdimensions in the nanometer regime.The focus is onnanowires, micropillars andrelated structures.Nanowiresare mainly usedinLEDdisplaytechnology wheremicropillarsare promising candidates forsingle-photonsources.These sourcesare ofinterestfor researchinquantuminformation andcryptography.The daily workconsists ofdeveloping new methods andsoftwarethat cansimulate Maxwell's equations in these structures. Subsequently the structures are analyzed and new improved designs are suggested. The project involves anumber of Europeanuniversitiesprovidingexperimentalfacilities. Resultsaredisseminatedbypublication ofarticlesin peer-reviewed scientific journals, by presentations at international conferencesand by teachingof studentsat the institute.
