Bioresources play an important role in our transition towards circular economy. In particular, biowaste from households and industry represent a significant resource that should be utilised in the best way possible. The question is how we can prioritise the various utilisation options from an environmental perspective? And how we balance environmental, economic and societal impacts? This webinar provides concrete examples related to food waste prevention and management, production of bioplastic from urban biowaste, and new approaches for life cycle assessment of biorefinery technologies.

To ensure circular economy the food sector should be more sustainable. This can be achieved by improving the management of food waste according to the food waste pyramid, which prioritises prevention, redistribution and high-value utilisation of food waste over energy conversion. Several solutions for retail food waste management are examined.

Urban organic waste such as food waste and sewage sludge can be utilised as a substrate to produce biopolymers like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), which can be used in several products instead of conventional fossil-based plastic. The potentials of PHA, the environmental profile of the technology, and the importance of the geographical settings are investigated.

16.00-16.15 Process-oriented life cycle assessment of biorefineries
Concetta Lodato, Postdoc
A life cycle assessment tool for modelling of bioresource conversion into energy, material, and fuels is presented. The application on a biorefinery case study addresses the complexity of material recirculation through integrated systems of technologies considering i) composition of bioresources, ii) technology configuration, iii) product yields, and iv) environmental performance.
