DTU Space invites applications for a Postdoc position starting as soon as possible on Satellite Altimetry for inland water retrieval. The position is associated with the new Space Geodesy division that carries out research in the fields of Geodesy, Geodynamics and Geoinformatics and associated government consultancy.

The main tasks will be modelling of lake and river level variations using radar altimetry measurements from space supporting national and international projects financed by ESA, Danida and Innovation-fund Denmark.

The primary focus will be the development of methods an algorithms to derive enhanced inland water levels. Development of processing and re-tracking methods which integrate auxiliary information like a digital elevation model, a water mask etc to enhance the processing is foreseen. Associated development of improved inland processing and analysis techniques (at Level 0-1) must be developed/implemented further to improve particularly the use of SARin radar altimeter technology (Cryosat-2).

The secondary focus will be to develop methods to retrieve inland water level from ICESAT-2 laser sensor and SWOT data in preparation for launch.

The final focus is to support an innovation project at DTU space on the integrated use of drones and satellite altimetry for enhanced inland water retrieval. 

Responsibilities and tasks
 
The work will involve writing, testing and optimizing software and applying this to satellite and potentially droned based field measurements of inland water level.

  • You will optimize and develop methods to take full advantage of combining different satellite data sets
  • You will publish descriptions of the new findings in the international peer reviewed literature
  • You will present your research at international conferences
  • You will communicate effectively with colleagues and be able to work as part of a team to achieve ambitious goals
  • You will contribute to research-based teaching and co-supervising student projects in Earth and Space Physics and Engineering Programme

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. For this position, experience with Earth Observation data and computational solutions to inverse problems, is essential. We expect the candidate to have:

  • Experience in working with large satellite data sets and development of algorithms
  • At least basic knowledge of in-land water processing and interpretation of satellite altimetry.
  • Have good expertise in programming, e.g. in Python, R, or other high-level programming languages
  • Demonstrated the ability to publish in the international peer-reviewed research literature

  • Presentation skills appropriate for communicating research findings at international conferences
  • Passion to work on complex, challenging topics
  • Ability to thrive on collaboration and teamwork

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.

Workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus, approximately 15 km north of central Copenhagen.
