The CHEC Research Centre at the Chemical Engineering Department invites applications for a PhD position with a starting date of 1 August 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD project will be carried out at the Biomass Gasification Group (BGG) within the CHEC Research Centre.

At the CHEC Research Centre, we focus on chemical engineering principles applied in combustion, harmful emission control, gasification, catalysis, continuous production of pharmaceuticals and advanced measuring technology. At BGG/CHEC we have large experience with pyrolysis processes and product characterization.

Recycling of plastic waste is gaining more attention and it presents an alternative to combustion or disposal of plastic waste. Some types of plastics, such as PMMA and PEX are not applicable for direct recycling and often it is impossible to separate different plastic types from other waste fractions. In such cases pyrolysis may be an attractive method to recycle plastic waste by converting it to chemicals and fuels.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be engaged in a PhD project that will focus on the opportunities to use pyrolysis as a method to convert plastic rich wastes into valuable products. You will carry this out: 

  • by a system study; the available quantities of plastic waste for pyrolysis will be assessed, quantified and potential markets for the pyrolysis products will be evaluated.
  • by conducting an experimental study; different pyrolysis concepts will be tested, process optimization will be conducted and the type and yield of valuable products determined. Different plastic streams will be tested including household waste and industrial waste plastics. The char product will be analyzed considering the environmental impact and applicability as either fuel, building material or soil enhancer.
Candidates should have 
  • a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year
  • knowledge and/or experience with thermochemical conversion of biomass or waste materials
  • knowledge and/or experience with process optimization and product characterization (gas, oil, char)
  • excellent laboratory skills
  • the Ability to work independently, plan and carry out experiments, be part of a dynamic group
  • good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The work will be carried out partially at DTU Risø Campus.
