A PhD scholarship on “wind energy and society” is being offered by DTU, as part of the EU-supported Marie-Curie Innovative Training Program project “MISTRAL”. The successful candidate will be hosted and supervised by the department of Wind Energy (Risø Campus), in collaboration with the department of Management Engineering (Lyngby campus). This project (ESR 9) will belong to the work stream of Work Package 4; Socio-political dimensions to social acceptance.

 
Research Field & Objective

The tendency towards using competitive tendering schemes as a preferred form for the implementation of renewable energy generation is driven by the desire to reduce costs. However, this favours financially strong developers because projects need to be developed further to be able to take part in the tendering. The concern is that smaller, locally-based, organisations will not be able to take part in this manner of tendering, reducing the influence, and hence acceptance, of local communities.  This project’s objective is to look at how competitive tendering schemes are implemented in different countries and how different actors at various scales react to and co-shape the process, for both new and re-powering projects. It will examine how the EU’s market-oriented policies for energy transition are implemented nationally and how it relates to questions of energy justice and energy democracy.

 
Responsibilities and tasks

As an Early Stage Researcher (ESR), you will be an active member of a research project team assisting in the delivery of research and training activities of the MISTRAL Network, working on the specific topic of  ‘Social acceptance, path dependency and the low carbon transition’ and required to work towards the expected results of this project.

 

The Early Stage Researcher will undertake research in the framework of the project MISTRAL: “Multi-sectoral approaches to Innovative Skills Training for Renewable energy & sociAL acceptance”. The Early Stage Researcher will be funded for 36 months through the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Innovative Training Network (ITN) programme. This is an initiative by the European Commission to train creative, entrepreneurial, innovative researchers, who are able to face current and future societal challenges, and will convert knowledge and ideas into products and services for the economic and social benefit of Europe.

 

MISTRAL is an interdisciplinary network which works to understand the complex challenges in improving the acceptance of renewable energy infrastructure investment, and provide innovative solutions to break down barriers to the transition to a low carbon economy in Europe.

 
Key research tasks:
  • Identification of the impacts of different tendering schemes on an actor’s ability to participate.
  • Provide suggestions for the design of more collaborative tendering schemes allowing for more local engagement, investment, commercial development and employment.
  • Development of skills in policy analysis and insights into the governance of Renewables at the EU/National interface

Participate in the outreach and dissemination activities of the MISTRAL Network project, commensurate with research at PhD level.


Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.


Candidates should have a master's degree in a social science related field, e.g. science- and technology studies, human geography, planning and public participation, sustainability studies, design and innovation studies, sociology, environmental management, anthropology, political science, etc. or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in a social science related field of study.


Moreover, we expect the candidate to have a strong interest in wind energy and qualitative research experience.


The working language of the project is English and thus the candidate must have suitable skills in both written and spoken English. The project is, however, located in Denmark and skills in Danish or a Scandinavian language is considered a strong advantage.

 

The candidate must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctorate. This 4 year period is measured from the date of obtaining the degree which would formally entitle to embark on a doctorate.

 

They must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their selection for this post.

 
Approval and Enrolment

The assessment of the applicants will be made by a committee from DTU Wind Energy and DTU Management Engineering, in consultation with the other MISTRAL project members.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

 

The workplace is primarily DTU Risø Campus, Roskilde, Denmark. However, co-supervision and other activities will also take place on the DTU Lyngby Campus, Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. Moreover, all ESRs will participate in international secondments to other organisations in the MISTRAL network and outreach activities with audiences beyond the research community.
