Department of Energy Conversion and Storage at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Energy) invites applications for one PhD-position in investigation of rechargeable batteries using in situ neutron and hard synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The PhD project is part of the ESS Lighthouse SMART – Structure of Materials in Real Time and will be carried out in collaboration with SDU. The project will be performed in the section "Imaging and Structural Analysis". The position is available starting April 1 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The project focuses on studies of commercial and prototype rechargeable batteries, e.g. lithium and sodium ion batteries, with emphasis on in situ and in operando diffraction studies. Structural changes, degradation and intercalation/conversion reactions during charge/discharge will be studied using a combination of hard synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction and scattering.

The project includes collaboration with academic and industrial partners. 

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The candidate should have a master’s degree in chemistry, physics or similar with good knowledge of solid state chemistry and electrochemistry and experience in battery research. Experience in powder diffraction is a prerequisite.

As a successful candidate you have :

  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
  • The ability to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

DTU Energy is currently situated at both Risø Campus, close to the town of Roskilde, and Lyngby Campus, north of Copenhagen. In 2019, the entire Department will move to new facilities at Lyngby Campus.
