The Quantum and Laser Photonics Group at DTU Fotonik is seeking a candidate for an Assistant Professor position in the field of design and simulations of highly efficient solid-state sources of single indistinguishable photons.

Single-photon sources (SPSs) play an important role in quantum information applications, which generally require near-unity efficiency and a high single-photon purity as well as indistinguishable photon emission. Furthermore, the ideal SPS should be deterministic and not involve heralding. The semiconductor quantum dot represents a promising platform for such a SPS, however a major challenge is to establish control of the light emission.

The position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. We provide you with the best conditions including a mentor, state-of-the-art research infrastructure, teacher training and relevant networks. After maximum 6 years you will be evaluated by an external assessment committee, and if evaluated positively, you will acquire a permanent Associate Professorship.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will participate in a project team with several Postdocs and PhD students, which will design and fabricate SPSs meeting all the requirements of the quantum information applications. The optical simulations will be performed using a combination of the modal method, representing state-of-the-art in optical simulations of single-photon sources, and existing commercially available techniques, e.g. finite elements modelling. In addition, the indistinguishability of the emitted photons in the presence of phonon-induced decoherence mechanisms will be calculated using an open quantum system master equation approach.

Your overall responsibility is to set up the numerical simulations framework to be used in the analysis of high-performance SPSs. In a collaborative effort, the team will analyse and propose novel SPS designs allowing for a good compromise between offering high performance and representing a robust design compatible with fabrication constraints. Additional responsibility includes supervision of the PhD students working on the theory and the designs and of MSc and BSc students associated with the project. You will be required to take Learning Lab courses to develop your teaching skills and to eventually be responsible for one or more full courses. Finally, you are expected to prepare research grant applications and attract external funding.

At the end of the period as Assistant Professor, you must be able to be responsible for courses and to lecture in Danish. Thus, you must be willing to learn Danish during the Assistant Professorship.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). In addition, the candidate should have: 

  • Knowledge of quantum optics, cavity quantum electrodynamics and of quantum emitters in nanophotonic structures.
  • Experience with numerical simulations of the electromagnetic field.
  • Experience with Matlab, Python or a similar scientific programming language.
  • Willingness to work in close collaboration with an internal project team consisting both of theoreticians and experimentalists. Willingness to supervise PhD, MSc and BSc students, to teach full courses and to write and submit research grant applications.

Tenure Track at DTU

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
