DTU Space would like to invite applications for a Postdoc position starting in June 2019 on the topic of “Low Energy X-Ray Research”. The position will be based in the Division of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics whose research focuses on High energy instrumentation, large scale structure of the universe, compact objects, exoplanets, space weather, cosmoclimatology and electrical discharges in the atmosphere.


The Division of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics operates a series of laboratories, in particular x-ray facilities, detector labs, a multilayer deposition lab as well as a lab for studying atmospheres.  This Postdoc position focuses on a newly established low-energy X-ray facility with research within studies of thin film coatings etc.

Responsibilities and tasks
The aim of this position is to
  • Produce and characterize coated X-ray mirrors representative of the ATHENA optics for demonstration of performance,
  • Evaluate short- and long-term stability of the possible material candidates for the X-ray mirror coatings,
  • Identify possible coating contaminants and the effects these may have on mirror development processes,
  • Characterization of ATHENA X-ray mirrors via reflectivity measurements utilizing a 1.5 keV reflectometer,
  • Complete assessment of coating performance by combining X-ray reflectivity measurements at 1.5 keV, 8.047 keV and synchrotron radiation,
  • Validate X-ray measurements considered for characterization of thin film coatings.
  • The above work is connected to a contract with ESA, and therefore the expected tasks also include collecting information to write monthly reports and technical notes, planning the required work to successfully complete the work package tasks etc.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent within the area of thin film production and x-ray

measurements and analysis.

For this position, experience with X-ray laboratories and thin film coating instrumentation is essential. In particular

  • Operating and maintaining laboratories; repair and order instrument components, train and teach students to use equipment
  • Establish experimental procedures for research and development of future X-ray telescope missions
  • Analyze and interpret results from thin film coatings

Furthermore, we are looking for someone who has

  • Demonstrated the ability to publish at the highest-level in the international peer-reviewed research literature
  • Presentation skills appropriate for communicating research findings at international conferences
  • Passion to work on complex, challenging topics
  • Ability to thrive on collaboration and teamwork

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 2 years.

Workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus, approximately 15 km north of central Copenhagen.
