The AutoFlow group at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain), at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking a skilled automation engineer to lead in the development and maintenance of automated cell screening, analytical chemistry, and next generation sequencing workflows.

DTU Biosustain is focused on developing the next generation of bio sustainable technologies using synthetic biology techniques for the development of advanced materials and chemicals, smart and sustainable agriculture, and personalized human health applications.  We are looking to develop Big –Omics Data generation workflows and then apply advanced AI methods in order to push the boundaries of what is considered the current state-of-the-art in synthetic biology.

AutoFlow Group
The AutoFlow group at CFB translates, builds, and maintains automated workflows for Big –Omics Data generation using various robots and liquid handling equipment. Core workflows within AutoFlow include automated strain screening and sample handling for multi-omics analysis. The AutoFlow group collaborates extensively other scientific and technical groups within the CFB including software engineering, genome engineering, analytics, and next generation sequencing. 

Job description

Job responsibilities include:

  • Developing and validating automated methods in conjunction with 1-2 automation technicians on different types of integrated and customized automation workstations such as the Tecan EVO or Agilent Bravo
  • Developing, troubleshooting, and optimizing protocols in collaboration with domain experts
  • Managing a group of automation technicians who will be responsible for handling orders, preparing reagents, and other day-to-day tasks
  • Researching and investigating new technologies and/or methods that could be applied to improve the core and future workflows of the group
  • Being the point of contact for automation related needs at the center
  • Publishing new methods in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, and disseminate knowledge of new automated workflows that are and will be developed to the scientific and automation community is highly encouraged. 

The qualification requirements are:

  • Masters or Doctorate in automation, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or similar field
  • Extensive experience programming and operating liquid handlers and other automated laboratory equipment in the life-sciences
  • Experience in microbiology and biochemistry is needed.  In particular, the candidate should have extensive experience in suspension cultivation of microbes and/or mammalian cells
  • Experience in analytical chemistry is needed.  In particular, it would be desirable if the candidate had experience working with metabolomics, fluxomics, and/or proteomics applications.
  • Competence in script based programming (e.g. Python) preferably applied to automation systems is recommended
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team is a must

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The place of work will be the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (CFB) at Building 220, Kemitorvet, 2800 Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
