A 2 year postdoc position, starting 1 July 2019, is available to: (i) develop plant-wide models of resource recovery operations in wastewater treatment plants; (ii) collect and process full-scale data in close collaboration with partners in South-Africa; (iii) calibrate models with the available data, and perform model-based optimization of resource recovery operations in full-scale wastewater treatment plants; and, (iv) evaluate recovery options using life cycle assessment methods.

The postdoc project is part of the ERASE (Evaluation of Resource recovery Alternatives in South African treatment systems) project funded by the DANIDA Fellowship Center, and Professor Krist V. Gernaey and Senior Researcher Xavier Flores-Alsina will supervise it.

The successful candidate will join an innovative, collaborative, international and multidisciplinary team within the Process and Systems Engineering Research centre (PROSYS) at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at DTU. During the project, there will be close collaboration with The University of Cape Town (South Africa), The University of KwaZulu Natal (South Africa) and different South African water utilities (City of Cape Town, Ethekwini municipality). 

For a successful development and progress of the ERASE project, DTU will make use of mathematical models in Matlab/Simulink. One of the main goals of this research project is to apply the models to practical cases, and to use model-based optimization for comparing the usefulness and economic value of different resource recovery alternatives.

Responsibilities and tasks
Consequently, the research activities in the proposed postdoc project, assume that you are able to: 

  • Work independently on development and calibration of mathematical models;
  • Work in a team for collection of complex data sets;
  • Actively participate and take lead on the dissemination of the obtained results, in high-impact scientific journals and in international conferences;
  • Are interested in participating in co-supervision of PhD and master students;
  • Are interested in participating in the writing of project proposals.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

You are expected to have:
 
  • A chemical engineering degree, with a flair for biotechnology (and experience);
  • Strong background in mathematical modelling and optimization, especially with extensive knowledge in modelling of wastewater treatment processes (PhD on the topic would be preferable);
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink;
  • Experience with planning and execution of data collection in full-scale;
  • Experience in collaborative projects with international partners in developing countries.
  • Willingness to travel
  • Experience with the elaboration and publication of scientific papers in view of successful dissemination of research results.
Furthermore, you thrive in a highly ambitious research centre; you are enthusiastic and a team player, result oriented and structured.

Good communication skills in both written and spoken English are expected.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is from 1 July 2019 to the 30 June 2021.
