We are seeking a Software Development Engineer to be a central part of a core team transferring groundbreaking research into crucial tools supporting the wind energy industry. The key contribution will be development of new tools by supporting scientists and development engineers in programming and converting prototypes into commercial codes. In close collaboration with scientific and technical colleagues, you have a direct impact on developing new generation of tools and promoting a renewable energy future.


This position is in the Wind Turbine Structures and Component Design (SAC), located at our Risø campus in Roskilde. The SAC section focuses on the design and prediction of the structural response of wind turbines and their components. The research and innovation activities deal with loads and their dependence on environmental conditions, structural design and testing, and methods to quantify reliability and operational lifetime. Working in the SAC section provides you with access to world class test facilities and equipment, commercial FE solvers, HPC systems, opportunities to learn more through in-house seminars and the ability to attend conferences and courses.

The job

This position’s primary focus is to work closely with researchers and development engineers to provide software development knowledge and best practices and convert a prototypes and ideas into efficient codes that benefit the wind energy community. The work involves five main areas of focus: 

  • Further development, testing and support of in-house cross section analysis software BECAS, interfacing with other tools within DTU Wind toolchain;
  • Development of pre- and post-processors for commercial and in-house codes for wind turbine structural simulations and towards creation of digital twins of these structures;
  • Development of post-processing tools for data acquisition systems (making scripts for data streaming to the databases and clouds, visualizing the data, machine learning, post-processing digital image correlation results, etc.);
  • Development of additional modules within commercial FE software (ABAQUS, MSC MARC, MSC ADAMS);
  • Communicate the best practices from the world of computer science to the research scientists working in the department.

Within the SAC section, you will be working as part of a team of scientists and software development engineers, who will provide introduction and training of skills that you may not have upon hire.


The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other software development staff within the Wind Energy Department, in cross-sectional projects.

 
Our expectations of you

We are primary using C++ as compiling languages and Python or MATLAB as scripting languages, but we are looking for deeper skills from a successful applicant.

 
Qualifications: 

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent and have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of one or more:
    • C++ syntax and the STL library
    • Python syntax and the scientific Python stack (numpy, scipy)
    • MATLAB syntax
  • Experience with software design and architecture
  • Experience in cross platform development
  • Experience with OpenMP/MPI libraries
  • Experience with one of the linear algebra/matrix libraries (Eigen, Armadillo, uBLAS, BLAS/LAPAK etc.)
  • Experience coupling Python with compiled languages (Pybind11, Boost.Python, SWIG, etc.)
  • Experience of development within finite element codes
  • Experience with Git / Gitlab
Optional competences:
  • Experience with one of the cross platform GUI libraries (Qt, WxWidgets, FOX toolkit etc.)
  • Some experience with modern versions of OpenGL and GLSL
  • Experience with databases and/or IoT protocols / Big Data
  • Basic understanding of or open mindedness towards elasticity theory and structural mechanics

In addition, it is expected that you fulfill the following: 

  • work independently and to efficiently deliver results on time
  • work as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • take the initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines
  • Communicate in English, both verbal and written

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The workplace is DTU Risø Campus, Roskilde, Denmark.
