Global emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are among the biggest challenges for human and animal health.


The Genomic Epidemiology Research Group, has as the primary task is to conduct targeted research with the aim of predicting and preventing infectious diseases in humans and animals, and supporting global detection, surveillance and control, with a specific focus on AMR. The research group combines expertise in conventional and molecular microbiology with epidemiology and bioinformatics and act as EU and WHO reference centre for AMR.


The Genomic Epidemiology Research Group is together with several partners worldwide and mainly funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation working on establishing and improving global surveillance of AMR. This is mainly based on metagenomics analyses of sewage, but there is a need to link these data to data on AMR-genes from single isolates from clinical and other sources.


For this the Research group seeks a candidate for a vacant PhD position in bioinformatics analyses of epidemiology of AMR.

Responsibilities and tasks
  • Your main responsibility will be to analyze the occurrence and genetic location of AMR genes in single bacterial isolates obtained from public databases and de novo generated data.
  • You will accomplish this using different bioinformatics tools to generate a global overview of AMR-genes in bacterial isolates as well as their genetic location.
  • You will communicate research results by presenting data at project meetings and international conferences, and write reports and manuscripts for publication.

The day-to-day work will be performed in close collaboration with other researchers in the Genomic Epidemiology group and with national and international partners associated with the global sewage project. Collaboration includes active participation in national and international meetings and conferences, sharing of data and results, contribution to joint publications.


Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in bioinformatics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
