EYCA award

Gold medal for excellent research to postdoc Maria Escudero Escribano

Chemistry Catalysis Fuel cells
Selected from a field of 90 gifted researchers, post doc Maria Escudero Escribano from DTU Physics was awarded the gold medal of the European Young Chemist Award (EYCA) 2016. Maria Escudero-Escribano received the medal for her excellent research in electrochemistry.

The aim of the EYCA award is to showcase and recognize excellent research carried out by young scientists working in the chemical sciences. In particular, EYCA is intended to honor and encourage younger chemists whose current research displays a high level of excellence and distinction.

This year was the 6th time that the competition was held and the number of participants was considerably higher than in previous competitions and also with a high level of scientific quality. From the 90 participants, 19 finalists were selected to give a talk on their research during the EYCA2016 competition session at the 6th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress in September 2016. The jury of the EYCA2016 competition session comprised: Richard R. Schrock (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2005, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA), Alceo Macchioni (University of Perugia, Italy) and Javier Garcia-Martinez (University of Alicante, Spain).

The winners were selected on the basis of their excellence in chemistry and related fields; originality and independent contribution; thoroughness and a depth of understanding of the research area; and awareness of the future perspectives of their research, and finally the quality of their presentation at the EuCheMS Chemistry Congress.

And the winner is...
Maria Escudero-Escribano demonstrated results from her work with polycrystalline and single-crystalline Pt-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. The aim with these catalysts is to increase the catalytic activity and stability, while reducing the Pt loading of fuel cells. And for her excellent research and the presentation during the EYCA2016 Maria Escudero-Escribano was awarded the gold medal in the group of finalists at the 35 years old level (picture).
