100 young people from all over the world present new innovative ideas for solving urban climate challenges.

Young entrepreneurs, students and influencers from all over the world will meet at Next Generation City Action at DTU and bring forward the youth perspective, current research and innovation on pressing city challenges. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 8. October at DTU Skylab and is leading up to the C40 World Mayors Summit from 9. - 11. October.

At the Next Generation Summit, the young entrepreneurs and students will present a number of projects including electric mopeds for transporting goods and passengers in cities, and apps that nudge residents of densely isolated urban properties to vent.

“Young professionals have an important voice in the climate debate. Students show how their academic research can contribute to the policy planning and strategy development of city mayors and municipalities by providing inspiring solution roadmaps. Young entrepreneurs inspire industry and cities with new innovative technological solutions to climate challenges.  The same applies to the influencers, which provide input to city delegates on how to engage and empower young people and youth organizations in city climate action,” says Marie Louise Pollmann-Larsen, project manager at DTU Skylab.

Next Generation City Action is built on a series of events and will focus on the two urban thematic areas of next generation buildings and carbon free streets. In the months leading up to the summit, students have been working on developing an innovative overview of solutions from their university and city context that they will be pitching to the city delegates during the high level summit.

The young professionals come from a total of seven countries: Denmark (50), Colombia (7), Ethiopia (7), Kenya (12), Mexico (9), South Africa (10) and South Korea (3).

Urban action

On the first day 16 young influencers representing leading climate action movements will onboard a trip around Denmark to explore and challenge how youth is involved in driving urban climate action. After that an official opening and reception will be held at DTU Skylab with inspirational talks and tech bazar, representing a unique opportunity to connect with more than 100 young professionals.

The reception concludes a day where young international entrepreneurs have explored potential private public partnerships and innovative urban solutions as means of driving towards next generation buildings and green mobility.

The contribution by the young professionals to the C40 World Mayors Summit will be concluded at the summit in an event at Tivoli Congress Center, where five finalists student groups will pitch in front of a jury represented by P4G and city representatives. The students will present their innovative city solution roadmaps for Mexico City, Medellín, Durban, Nairobi and Addis Ababa.

The initiative is led by DTU Skylab with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and close collaboration with C40, P4G, Municipality of Copenhagen, EIT Climate KIC and partners.

Startups pitch at Next Generation City Action

14 early stage technology startups have been recruited from Denmark, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Colombia or Mexico based on their ability to deliver diverse innovative solutions relevant to accelerate climate solutions for next generation buildings or carbon free streets. We highlight three of the projects.

Seagrass turns into insulation

Læsø Zostera is making healthy acoustic panels and insulation with a low CO2 footprint out of local sourced seagrass. The mission of the company is to store CO2 in long lasting biobased building materials. The acoustic panels are contributing to solving problems with bad sound environments e.g. in offices or schools and the insulation products are contributing to energy efficient buildings. The seagrass panels are most often replacing mineral wool based products with an extremely high energy foot print, or fossil based products made of plastic.
Læsø Zostera will pitch among other industry leaders during the City & Business Forum break out session on 10th. of October at C40 World Mayors Summit.

Mobile sensors detect air pollution hotspots in cities

Polisensio has developed a hardware and software solution for mobile urban Air Quality Monitoring. The data collection devices, polipods, are installed on urban fleets of vehicles that move constantly through the city, thus creating a Network of Moving Sensors. Having the sensors moving ensures up to 90% coverage of the city surface, while the data stream is constant and real-time. data collection, analytics and visualization system dedicated to (smart) cities and businesses. The end product is environmental intelligence about Air Quality delivered on Polisensio’s web platform in several formats like heatmaps, forecasts, charts and simulations on how to tackle air pollution hotspots in cities.
