Quantum Technology

What is a quantum chip and why do we need it?

The quantum chip is the fundamental hardware that the world needs if we are to realise technologies such as quantum computers, sensors and communication.

Facts

Quantum chips are necessary to realise the following quantum technologies:

The quantum computer
In quantum computing, quantum chips form the processors—still largely experimental but advancing steadily in scale and capability.

The quantum computer is expected to be able to perform enormous computational tasks. This will make a big difference to the type of computational problems that exist in areas such as logistics, finance and medicine.

Quantum sensors
In quantum sensing, the quantum chip acts as a platform to control and read quantum states with exceptional sensitivity.

A quantum sensor can detect extremely small changes in, for example, magnetic fields, temperatures, acceleration or pressure.

Quantum sensors are already being used for navigation and mapping of the subsoil – for example, prior to construction or to find raw materials.

In the future, they are also expected to be used for better diagnosis and personalized treatments of diseases through cell monitoring.

Quantum communication
Quantum communication or quantum cryptography is a way of securing information.

Photonic quantum chips are already being used to generate, manipulate, and detect entangled photons. These chips underpin technologies like quantum key distribution (QKD).

With QKD the sender encodes information in quantum states of light, which are subsequently measured by the receiver.

The strength of quantum communication is that the sender and receiver can detect any attempt at eavesdropping.

Quantum communication is expected to become a powerful tool in the protection of sensitive personal data or information critical to society.
