DTU and TotalEnergies have agreed to set up a collaboration that will lead to the establishment of a centre of excellence within the field of wind hybrid systems.

In a memorandum of understanding, DTU and TotalEnergies agree to collaborate on research and education within clean energy. The research centre will be located at DTU Risø Campus, as part of DTU Wind Energy, where DTU's strategy and ambition to strengthen the transition to a sustainable society is at the fore through world-leading research in wind energy technologies.

"DTU is pleased to expand the research collaboration with TotalEnergies in the pursuit towards more green energy solutions. DTU is recognized globally for its research in sustainable energy. This collaboration will focus on excellent science and new technologies within wind energy and hybrid systems. These are key technologies in the transition towards climate-neutral energy production," says DTU President Anders Bjarklev.

The centre will establish an advanced clean energy research program that involves hybrid power plants and hydrogen technologies. It includes the construction of a pilot hybrid power plant to supplement the existing plant at DTU Risø Campus. Other avenues for joint research will be explored on topics such as next-generation wind technology and offshore wind, including deep ocean floating technology, potentially along with other areas of clean energy research.

“We are pleased to create the DTU-TotalEnergies Excellence Centre for Clean Energy to develop and demonstrate cost-effective and reliable technology solutions of offshore wind and hybrid system. This center is one more step towards our ambition to be Net Zero by 2050 together with society,” says Chief Technology Officer at TotalEnergies, Marie-Noëlle Semeria.

Another core aspect of the centre is the development of several educational activities. These include a graduate school in hybrid power plant research and an education and training program with, i.e. online masters courses, customised training, research staff exchange, and student projects.
