Head of Studies on Industrial Engineering students: “They will be the link between all our forms of energy”
The first students will soon begin the Industrial Engineering study programme. It is interdisciplinary and prepares students for careers in a growing, diverse sector.

The Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programme in Industrial Engineering has been carefully designed. It has been developed in close collaboration with the industry that will employ the students once they have completed their studies, and on top of that, it’s based at DTU Risø Campus, right next to Roskilde Fjord and just a few kilometres from Roskilde.
“My colleagues and I have put together a programme that enables students to act as the link between all our forms of energy and energy systems. It will be their task to design and manage the complex energy networks of the future. In other words, they are indispensable, and I am very much looking forward to welcoming them later this year,” says Head of Studies Torben Knudby, who himself has a BEng degree.
He worked in the business world for over 25 years before returning to DTU, first to teach and subsequently to serve as Head of Studies for the Industrial Engineering study programme.
“It has been an exciting process to develop Industrial Engineering, and along the way we have received professional input from many different companies, all of which have shown great interest in recruiting the graduates,” explains Torben Knudby.
The programme is interdisciplinary and combines business subjects such as economics and management with traditional engineering subjects, including thermodynamics, materials science and energy technology. This combination ensures that students gain a broad understanding of how to manage a large-scale operation such as an energy network. Later in the programme, they can specialize, and they also undertake a six-month internship at a company of their own choosing.

Candidates for a growing industry
One of the companies that has contributed expert input is the Danish firm Andel, which has subsidiaries across various segments of the energy sector – including Cerius, Radius Elnet, Clever, Mind Energy, Fibia, and Andel Energi. Andel is owned by its members in Zealand and has 3.5 million customer accounts nationwide.
“We’re a growing industry, and we can offer a variety of roles, so if I were a prospective student, I’d try to apply as soon as I’d finished my studies. You can also give it a go whilst you’re still studying, as we have both student jobs and work placements for the right candidates,” explains Ole Alm, Senior Consultant at Andel.
He continues:
“If you have a good idea for your final-year project, you can also apply to carry it out in collaboration with us, so there are plenty of opportunities. However, we cannot guarantee a job or a collaboration, as it must be the right match.”
The BEng programme in Industrial Engineering lasts three and a half years and is based at DTU’s Risø campus, which is renowned for its research into energy technology, industry collaboration, and world-class research facilities.
