Fact box

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites develop resistance to the drugs used to fight them.

The most widespread form is antibiotic resistance, where bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. This can make infections harder to treat and increase the risk of severe illness. Antibiotic resistance is considered one of the greatest challenges for modern healthcare because effective treatment of infections is a prerequisite for surgeries, cancer treatment, and intensive care.
