Structures
Specialization (7): Structures
Structural engineering is the art and science of designing safe and durable structures that meet robustness and resilience requirements while balancing resources. The focus lies on understanding, modelling, and controlling the mechanical behaviour of the load-carrying system of a structure and the loads it must withstand.
The list of associated programme-specific courses required for fulfilling this specialisation is:
| 41237 | Dynamics of structures: theory and analysis | 5 | point | Spring F3A (Tues 8-12) |
| 41963 | Advanced Concrete Structures | 5 | point | Autumn E4B (Fri 8-12) |
| 41968 | Bridge Structures | 5 | point | Autumn E2A (Mon 13-17) |
| 41972 | Plated Steel Structures | 5 | point | Spring F1A (Mon 8-12) |
Other relevant courses, though not needed for receiving the specialisation, include: (i) Experimental Solid Mechanics; (ii) Experimental Structural Mechanics; (iii) Structure-borne Sound; (iv) Finite Element Methods; (v) Structural Fire Safety Design; (vi) Structural Design of Precast Concrete Buildings; (vii) Computational Structural Modelling 2 – Non-linear Finite Element Method; and (viii) Seismic and Wind Engineering.
Specialisations are merely recommended ways of choosing courses from the curriculum. Applicants are not admitted to a specialisation but to the programme, and they can choose among all the courses in the curriculum (according to the directions given). However, if the specialisation requirements have been fulfilled, the specialisation title may be added to the diploma.
