Irini Angelidaki receives 2.5 million euro for the research project ”ANAEROB - The ANAEROBic treasure trunk”.

The ANAEROB project aims to create a platform linking microbiology and biotechnology. The platform should be applicable in many different situations and for various purposes. Anaerobic processes are performed by a well-structured microbial community and have a great potential for upcycling organic wastes and industrial/agricultural residual resources to achieve a circular bioeconomy. Using microbial consortia (microorganisms in a mixture) instead of pure cultures when working with waste as a substrate is necessary. Currently, random cultures of microorganisms are used for biological processes with waste. Extensive knowledge about the interactions of microorganisms in the anaerobic microbiome is needed to better utilise and purify biological waste. ANAEROB aims to understand how to design microbial consortia for specific processes based on genetic information about anaerobic microorganisms.

ERC grants

The European Research Council, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. Every year, it selects and funds the very best, creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based in Europe.

The ERC offers four core grant schemes: Starting, Consolidator, Advanced and Synergy Grants. The Advanced Grant is given to active researchers who have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years who need funding to carry out ground-breaking, high-risk projects.
