Light researchers’ building was inaugurated with … light

DTU’s new laboratories and study areas in Building 340 for research and education in light has been officially inaugurated.

On 27 June, DTU celebrated the inauguration of Building 340 at Lyngby Campus. The three-storey building totalling 3,800 m2 has been taken into use by researchers and students at DTU Fotonik, and many of them also attended the celebration.

From the podium, President Anders Bjarklev said about the building:

“It’s a manifestation of our openness and our inviting culture, which I think is important for students, staff, and partners. It’s crucial that we as a university invites collaboration. Building 340 is a place for meeting, and a place for connecting. It’s also a world-class research environment—a research infrastructure which is so important to have for a technical university to be able to attract the best in the world to work and study with us.”

Instead of cutting a ribbon—after the speech—President Anders Bjarklev used a laser pointer to puncture a big, red balloon filled with Danish flags falling over the guests.

The celebrations took place in the building’s so-called ‘Line of Light’, an internal thoroughfare in the building, featuring large glass windows letting daylight into the building, while at night they contribute to illuminating the surrounding outdoor areas with the LED lights of the thoroughfare.

Several of the building’s laboratories are located on the basement floor to ensure darkness and as few vibrations as possible that may interfere with the exploration of light.
