The fact that DTU is a workplace with an international focus was clearly in evidence on Friday 7 June when the university invited all its staff and their families to attend ‘International Afternoon’. As many as 800 guests accepted the invitation to take part in the event focusing on social interaction and networking between colleagues, children and partners.
This was the third time it was held, and since 2011, the event has become a sure-fire success with growing attendance every year. With 500 international and 300 Danish guests, ‘International Afternoon’ has become the biggest family event at DTU. No fewer than 47 different nationalities from different departments met in a congenial atmosphere with the aim of getting to know each other better.
Dean of Graduate Studies and International Affairs Martin Bendsøe was delighted by the many guests—also the Danish contingent: “We look on our Danish staff as part of our international team,” he said in his welcoming speech, adding: “The event also reflects our holistic view of DTU’s staff. While our work is important, there has to be a good work-life balance.”
The event also gave staff the chance to show their workplace to their children. More than 200 children enjoyed plenty of entertainment, including face painting—many were transformed into tigers or clowns by a face painter—while a balloon man on a unicycle jumped into an oversized balloon. While the children were being entertained, the older guests enjoyed eco-friendly beer from DTU Brewery. The afternoon continued with an Italian buffet, Science Show, sports activities and a great deal more.
DTU’s HR department and DTU International Employees Network co-organised ‘International Afternoon’, which will be held again next year on Friday 13 June.
