New hall of residence to be built at Lyngby Campus

DTU will have a new hall of residence at its Lyngby campus—Hempel Kollegiet, DTU.

In spring 2016, construction work will start on a new hall of residence—Hempel Kollegiet, DTU—providing accommodation for 200 international students.

The facility will be sited in the green, wooded area on the corner of Anker Engelunds Vej and Lundtoftevej.

Living campus round the clock
Each year, DTU receives hundreds of international students. In fact, about one-third of the university’s 3,270 Master’s degree students come from abroad. The new residential units in Hempel Kollegiet, DTU will make it considerably easier for them to find accommodation. 'At the same time, the residence hall will bring more life to Lyngby Campus', says Claus Nielsen, Executive Vice President, University Director at DTU, and continues:

‘Hempel Kollegiet, DTU will relieve the shortage of student accommodation in our area. In addition, it will create more life in our campus in Lyngby, where more than 1,000 students already live. The construction of Hempel Kollegiet, DTU supports our vision of a living campus which never closes, but which is bursting with life 24/7.’

The new residential facility will be organized in three clusters, with each cluster comprising two buildings with 12 and 13 units on two or three floors. To promote a sense of community among the students, each floor has a communal kitchen and study lounge.

The buildings will have a simple U shape, and enclose an inner courtyard which will serve as a social meeting place. By having the woods as close to the buildings as possible, it creates student residences which boast a strong relationship between the internal and external environments.

Hempel Kollegiet, DTU offers huge potential
JJW ARCHITECTS has designed the facility. Lars B. Lindeberg MAA is one of the firm’s partners, and also heads the Learning and Culture department at JJW ARKITEKTER, and says:

‘The social element is crucial for students to have positive, learning experience at university, and at Hempel Kollegiet, DTU we are focusing on the interplay between the social aspects and the learning processes. We have developed the social space as a tried-and-tested approach to educational and collegial buildings. At DTU, the social space is large communities, the possibility of meeting companies, and an invitation to become part of Lyngby. At the same time, we ensure that the students feel at home in the small residential units where they are part of a more intimate community. The social space holds the potential for social sustainability, and it is this we are offering the 200 international students who will be living at Hempel Kollegiet, DTU.’

Construction work on Hempel Kollegiet, DTU will commence in spring 2016, and the buildings will be ready for occupation in connection with the start of the new academic year in autumn 2017.
