Young people excited about DTU

Again this year, the number of applicants selecting DTU as their first priority have increased. And this is good news at a time when both industry and politicians want more young people to choose an engineering programme.

The final list of applications for DTU’s programmes is now in and for the 13th year in a row, the number is up.

2,294 applicants put a DTU study programme as their first priority, a ten per cent increase on last year’s figure of 2,090.

"It is great that again this year, we can see that the young people’s interest in natural sciences and engineering is increasing."
Martin E. Vigild, Senior Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs

On the MSc Eng programme, the programmes Software Technology and Building Technology are the main drivers of the increased number of applications.

And under DTU’s newly developed BEng programme, which will take effect from the autumn semester 2014, Mechanical Engineering is the programme attracting most applicants.

“It is great that again this year, we can see that the young people’s interest in natural sciences and engineering is increasing, and this confirms our own opinion that we at DTU offer attractive engineering programmes that are in line with the jobs the young people dream of,” says Martin Vigild, DTU’s Senior Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Student Affairs.

And we need all the brilliant minds we can get.

Indispensable engineers
According to a new study from the Economic Council of the Labour Movement (ECLM), toward 2020 we will be lacking nearly 18,500 people with medium and long-term higher technical and scientific degrees.

A development which Martin Vigild believes would be a definite threat to Denmark’s future prosperity.

“Engineers can significantly impact societal development in a wide variety of key areas. They are actually essential if we are to solve the challenges Denmark is facing—both in relation to our environment, our health and our infrastructure, just to mention a few examples. Therefore, we not only welcome, but desperately need an increasing number of applicants to DTU again this year,” says Martin Vigild.

On 30 July, the applicants will learn whether their wish has been fulfilled so they can start at DTU on Monday, 1 September.
