Startup develops pork from stem cells

The company Meat Tomorrow is working to get stem cells to produce the pork of the future. Now entrepreneurs are taking out their first patent.

In seven or eight years’ time, fewer pigs may be slaughtered when we produce minced pork. Matias Ankjær (left) and David Valbjørn (right) are both co-founders of the company Meat Tomorrow, where they develop technology that can make pig stem cells produce meat. Photo: Mikal Schlosser

Facts

  • Biotechnology startup, founded in 2021 by David Valbjørn, Matias Ankjær, Josef Christensen, Henning Kempf and Jonathan Niclis.
  • Develops technology for the production of meat based on pig stem cells.
  • The meat is called cultured meat, and production will take place in bioreactors.
  • Large-scale production of cultured meat is expected to use less energy and emit less CO2 than conventional pork production.
