Gut bacteria may play a key role in the development of diseases

A new Danish research initiative funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation will uncover possible causal links between gut bacteria and obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Cardiometabolic syndrome or diseases, CMD, represents a constellation of metabolic abnormalities that are risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Metabolic syndrome is not a disease in itself. It is a collection of unfortunate disturbances in the body's conversion of nutrients (metabolism). These disturbances can lead to high blood pressure, a decrease in the body's own insulin production and elevated cholesterol levels. Each of these disorders is in itself a risk factor for other diseases. When combined, these disorders can significantly increase the risk of developing diseases that can be life-threatening.

All of these disorders together increase the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease in the form of heart palpitations, heart attack or stroke. The atherosclerosis associated with long-term metabolic syndrome not only causes atherosclerosis in the heart, but in all blood vessels of the body and can also cause problems with narrowed blood vessels in the legs.
