Remanufacturing

New National Centre to Fill Crucial Gap in Denmark’s Remanufacturing Efforts

Worn-out products are to become brand-new business opportunities. DTU and the Danish Industry Foundation are joining forces to establish Remanufactory – a national competence centre for remanufacturing, the first of its kind in Denmark.

The national competence centre, which is headed by Professor Tim C. McAloone, will support 150 companies in realizing the business potential of remanufacturing.

Fakta

  • The centre is led by Professor Tim C. McAloone and is based at DTU.
  • It is supported by the Danish Industry Foundation with funding of DKK 37 million and will run until 2028.
  • The aim is to establish a permanent national centre for remanufacturing, with a focus on electronics, mechanics, plastics, and metals.
  • The project is the largest initiative under the broader programme Circular Production – for a greener and stronger Danish business sector, launched by the Danish Industry Foundation to drive systemic change.

A focal point for knowledge and innovation

Remanufactory will act as a strategic focal point for the circular transformation of Danish industry. The project draws on expertise from five DTU departments and forms part of an international network involving leading research environments in Germany, Sweden, the United States, and Japan.

The project also contributes to a broader initiative launched by the Danish Industry Foundation: Circular Production – for a greener and stronger Danish business sector, encompassing thirteen projects to accelerate circular manufacturing in Denmark.

“Remanufacturing is a highly complex discipline that places great demands on companies’ logistics, production systems, and design practices. But the potential is indisputable. Our goal is to get more companies started with remanufacturing – thereby reducing resource consumption, lowering import dependency, and developing new, sustainable business models,” says Thomas Hofman-Bang, CEO of the Danish Industry Foundation.
