Admission requirements for the BSc in General Engineering
When you apply for admission you have to fulfill two sets of admission requirements:
- The general admission requirement: You must have an upper secondary exam that equates a Danish upper secondary exam
- The specific admission requirements: You must fulfill certain subjects at a certain level.
- English language requirement: All international applicants (with some exemptions) must document their English proficiency by taking one of the DTU approved tests. See details below.
General admission requirement
To apply to DTU you must have an upper secondary exam that equates a Danish upper secondary exam.
Exams from a Nordic country
If you are applying on the basis of an upper secondary exam from the Nordic countries, you can use this subject conversion table
International Baccalaureates (IB)
- IB Diploma with at least 24 points qualifies for admission to both bachelor’s in engineering and Bachelor of Sciences programmes.
- IB DP Course Results or IB Certificate with at least 18 points, minimum grade 3 in all six subjects, and at least three Higher Level subjects qualify for bachelor’s in engineering programmes.
- To qualify for the Bachelor of Sciences programmes with IB Course Results or Certificate, you must supplement with at least one A-level and one B-level subject (Danish standards).
- DTU only accepts IB retakes if the original exam was not passed.
- If you apply the same year as you complete the IB-exam, you must give us permission to receive your IB Diploma in the online database. You grant us permission to receive your IB Diploma by contacting your IB coordinator before the deadline of 1st of June.

Exams from all other countries
If you are applying on the basis of an upper secondary exam from any other country, the assessment of your subject levels is carried out by the bachelor admission’s team at DTU when you apply for admission.
Alternatively, you can apply for a pre-assessment between 1 September and 1 November to find out if you fulfil the admission requirements.

Specific admission requirements
In addition to the general admission requirement, you must fulfill the specific admission requirements.These requirements mean that you must have achieved a certain level in specific subjects.
The specific admission requirements for the BSc in General Engineering are (Danish levels):
- Mathematics A-level
- English B-level
- Physics B-level
- Chemistry B-level
- English language requirement (Refer to the drop-down menu below)
DTU will convert your levels and grades, if you have a non-Danish upper secondary exam.
However, if you have an IB or an exam from the Nordic countries, you can use the conversion tables above.

If you do not fulfill the specific level requirement you must pass supplement courses. You can use our Supplementary courses guide to help find online supplementary courses or you can find something on your own. If you do find courses on your own, make sure that DTU approves that the syllabus meets the required level in Denmark.
Re-calculation from 2022
If you have a Danish upper secondary exam finished after 1 May 2022 and take supplementary courses afterwards, please be aware of the new rules for re-calculation of your grade point average.
English language requirement
To be admitted to the English taught General Engineering programme, all applicants with an international upper secondary qualification must meet the English language requirement. This requirement is met by completing one of the approved tests below with a score above the minimum.
Note! Meeting the English B level subject requirement from your upper secondary education does not exempt you from taking an English test.

We only accept certificates that can be verified online.
The verification of TOEFL and IELTS tests expires after 2 years and will not be accepted if they are non-verifiable on 5 July.
Please note that when taking a TOEFL test you must register both DTU’s TOEFL code (1684) prior to the test for us to verify the score result online.
- “Native speakers” holding an English taught access-giving upper secondary exam/high school exam taken in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain or Ireland. (The exam must contain a passed academic English subject/course on a level the Danish Agency for Higher Education considers comparable to Danish B level English)
- Applicants holding one of the following access-giving exams, and having passed subjects on a level that the Danish Agency for Higher Education equivalents with the Danish B or A level in English
- Upper secondary exam from the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland and Island)
- Duborg-school exam
- International Baccalaureate (IB diploma programme)
- European Baccalaureate (from the “ScholaEuropaea”)
