Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Architectural Engineering

Many resources are currently expended on the construction and operation of buildings, but there is a goal that in the future all buildings should be sustainable and close to zero-energy buildings. To meet this goal, there is a need for civil engineers who can work with architects and other specialists on the design of buildings, building components and building systems. This is where you can make a difference, by applying your aesthetic and technical skills in combination to help create sustainable and functional buildings.

What will you learn?

On the Architectural Engineering study programme you learn about construction with a focus on energy, design, and sustainability. You will learn how buildings should be designed in order to be energy efficient, have a good indoor climate and contribute to sustainability. You will therefore be given strong competences in the construction disciplines that are essential to creating environmentally friendly buildings.

During the study programme, the technical engineering subjects will be supported by design projects and exercises. You will thereby learn how to integrate the technical knowledge into the early design process. This will give you solid knowledge of design methods, so that you can create buildings with minimal energy and resource consumption in collaboration with other professionals.

Study programme structure

At the start of the study programme, the foundational science subjects and technology core subjects are the primary focus. The science subjects give you basic skills in mathematics, physics, and geometry, while the technology core subjects focus on load-bearing building structures, building physics, indoor climate, energy needs, and sustainability.

You have great freedom to choose which subjects you want to take, so that they match your interests. To guide your choice of subjects, two recommended courses of study have been defined—energy design and construction design. Energy design is for people interested in designing buildings with a special focus on energy needs and indoor climate, while construction design is for people who want to create buildings with a special focus on the design of load-bearing structures.

Career opportunities

After completing your BSc you can do an MSc in Building Design and obtain a qualification targeted at the early phases of the design process, when decisions are made on the overall function and design of buildings. With an MSc in Building Design you can work for engineering consultants and in the building industry, but there are also openings with architect practices, large clients and government authorities.
